WILL MY DOG MAKE A GOOD THERAPY DOG?

 

Dog Characteristics:

  • Calm, quiet, attentive and comfortable around people and other animals?

  • Solid obedience skills including social manners and life skills

  • Enjoys being around people

 

Requirements:

  • At least one year old

  • Up to date on all required vaccinations

  • Passed the American Kennel Club “Canine Good Citizen Test”

  • Attend therapy dog classes and pass evaluation

 

Therapy Dog Training – 4 Weeks

  • Pre-requisite  Canine Good Citizen Test

  • Instructor’s recommendation

 

This course prepares the dog/handler team for social pet therapy visits through Love on a Leash. Some of the topics covered include better reliability of CGC behaviors, dog stress awareness and management, grooming, basic cues, additional therapy cues, tricks, exposure to situations encountered during visits, protocol in various facility situations, role-playing, and end of course evaluation

After completion of this course ,a supervised field experience program of 10 visits will be required before the application process for LOAL certification occurs.
